New York - First New York City Assembly

Let’s gather together on Saturday, March the 30th at Woodbine (thanks comrades) for the first public gathering of Potere al Popolo‘s NYC assembly. Do join us in discussion and participation, spring just peeped out and we are ready to organize!

Arriviamo alla primavera con la prima d’assemblea di PaP New York, occasione di dialogo e confronto su temi, questioni e battaglie a cui l’assemblea proverà a dare voce e forma nei mesi futuri. Ringraziamo i compagni e le compagne di Woodbine per averci messo a disposizione il loro spazio.

As an introduction to the assembly and as a presentation of our political project we have written a short document, which you can read here (https://bit.ly/2OnZNpd) and of which below you can find an excerpt.

★ Our primary principles and goals:

Considering both our engagement in electoral politics, as well as the (crucial) grassroots work that we carry out everyday, the principle idea that guides our work is that in considering the popular masses of people, in Italy as everywhere else in the world, we have two fundamental goals of the utmost urgency: 1) To destroy the false contradiction between reactionary/xenophobic forces and the dominant liberal/“progressive” paradigm, which positions itself as an “alternative.” This illusion of choice, proposes a decision between two sides of the same violent and oppressive coin; 2) To organize ourselves in a mass internationalist movement that is at once: radically feminist, attentive to questions of climate justice, anti-racist, anti-imperialist, anti-capitalist, and furthermore attentive to the intersectionality of these positions, making clear that transform society up from the roots, we must affirm and reinforce that an alternative to capitalism is not only necessary but possible via collective action.

★ Why is PaP! becoming active outside of the Italian context?

Potere al Popolo! is the only political force in Italy that has dozens of active assemblies outside of the country in Europe and, indeed, elsewhere. On the one hand, this is an expression of the huge emigration out of Italy (mostly by youth) that has been profoundly visible since the 2008 financial crisis, and on the other hand, of the interests that Italians have in keeping a link with their country while they are abroad. PaP! has always given the upmost attention to these common struggles and conditions, which is a key tool in responding to what, for us, is a fundamental human tendency: to create struggle collectively.

★ Che cosa pensa PaP?

Tanto quando ci candidiamo alle elezioni, quanto nel lavoro di base che portiamo avanti quotidianamente, l’idea che ci guida è che le classi popolari, in Italia come in tutto il mondo, abbiano oggi due compiti fondamentali ed estremamente urgenti: 1) smascherare la contrapposizione tra forze reazionarie e xenofobe e forze liberali e “progressiste” come una falsa alternativa che ci obbliga a scegliere tra due facce della stessa medaglia, due espressioni di uno stesso sistema che, nonostante e anzi per mezzo di una crisi profonda, continua a mettere il profitto e il mercato prima della vita e della natura, approfondendo ovunque lo sfruttamento e le diseguaglianze sociali; 2) organizzarsi in un movimento di massa che sia insieme femminista, ecologista, anti-razzista e anti-imperialista e che sappia trasformare alla radice questa società, affermando che un’alternativa al capitalismo è insieme necessaria e praticabile.

★ Perché PaP è presente anche fuori dall’Italia?

Potere al Popolo! è l’unica forza politica italiana che può contare su decine di assemblee attive fuori dal territorio nazionale, in Europa e non solo. Le ragioni di ciò sono, da un lato, la forte emigrazione (soprattutto giovanile) che caratterizza l’Italia e che dall’inizio della crisi del 2008 è in crescita costante, dall’altro, l’interesse che le italiane e gli italiani all’estero hanno nel mantenere vivo un legame con il proprio Paese e nel riflettere sulla propria condizione di emigranti, praticando (e a volte anche inventando) forme di solidarietà ed attivismo capaci di connettere problemi e lotte al di là dei confini. PaP! ha sempre prestato molta attenzione a questi fattori, insieme oggettivi e soggettivi, riuscendo ad essere uno strumento utile per rispondere a quello che per noi è un bisogno umano fondamentale: essere parte di una comunità in lotta.
